Now, everyone asks a question like 'how much cloth is required for kurta'. Generally, when a person buys a new kurta, he will ask the salesman at the clothing store to give him/her an estimation on how much fabric is required to make that particular piece. Fair enough! It is a common question heard by tailors and salesmen in the fabric’s shops. And it depends on many factors.
SAY GOODBYE TO LOSE AND LOUSY MEN'S ETHNIC WEAR
If you're anything like me (6'4''), it turns out that 1 yard of fabric actually equals roughly 3.5 meters. And, this is in the case when the width(panaha) of the fabric is 44inches.
The question asked is related to the different factors which should be considered before getting a kurta tailor-made or ready-made. In addition to the length of the particular fabric required, the estimated cost of the cloth material will also depend on the type of work done on it.
It may vary from Rs.1,000 to over Rs.15,000 depending on the special work done. As there are plain textured fabrics, and also fabrics with heavy handwork, the cost of the fabric may vary significantly.
If you have decided that you would like to purchase a kurta, now is the time to buy one. Because every time is a good time to get yourself a kurta. A kurta is a piece of clothing which can be worn on a number of occasions - a wedding, a party or even at home.
It is the traditional Mughal male garment which is purely made from cotton, and now using many other natural and synthetic materials and is long sleeved with different types of collars styles.
The other variant of this clothing is that of the kurta pajama which has gained tremendous popularity in recent times because it offers complete comfort as it can be buttoned on both the sides. And hence, does not come in the way while you are moving around in it.
What does the width of fabric(WOF) means?
Let’s learn some popular questions surrounding fabric widths so you can make the best decision when choosing your fabric.
Fabric width is the measurement of how wide your fabric is on a bolt. When the length of the fabric bolt is added to the width, the total length of your fabric is measured.
Since fabrics are used for different purposes, they come in a wide variety of widths. A standard bolt of upholstery weight cotton duck will measure 54 inches wide, but extra-wide drapery sheers can be as wide as 108 inches.
How Do Fabrics Get Their Width?
Woven fabrics are created by interlacing two sets of yarns or threads at right angles to each other — this process is called weaving. One set runs parallel to the selvage edge and is known as the warp. The other set runs perpendicular to the selvage edge and is known as weft (or fill). Yarns run back and forth between selvages and are woven over and under one another until a textile product is formed.
The yarns running along the length of the fabric are called warp yarns, while those running across from selvage to selvage.
The standard width of a fabric bolt can be anywhere from 35 inches to 108 inches. The average bolt will fall within the 40 to 60-inch range, with specialty fabrics falling on the outer reaches of the range. Until you know the width of your fabric, you won’t know how many inches you need for your desired outfit.
Most woven fabrics are between 45 and 60 inches wide. If you’re shopping online, make sure that you check the description for the width of your fabric before making a final decision about how many inches to purchase.
The width of fabric can be measured in two ways: cut width and selvage width. Cut width is the distance from raw edge to raw edge, while selvage width is the length of the fabric bolt before it’s cut.
Selvage width is usually much wider than cut width. The standard selvage width for most fabrics is between 35-60 inches, but specialty fabrics like velvet and silk can be as wide as 108 inches.
What is single width fabric?
Single-width fabrics may or may not have a directional print. Directional prints are printed in a specific orientation, so it would matter which way you cut your fabric up.
For example, if you have a floral print, most people would prefer to have large flowers across their chest rather than just at their waistline. To ensure that this happens, when cutting out a pattern with a directional print, you should fold your fabric in half along its length. This will ensure that the motifs are lined up correctly when you cut them out.
What is double width fabric?
Double-width fabrics are folded in half before they are wound around a bolt, meaning there are two layers of fabric when you unroll it. When you unroll double-width fabric, you’ll only have one selvage edge (it can be found along one side), and both the right and wrong sides of the fabrics will be facing inwards.
Double-width fabrics are usually wrapped around their bolts with the wrong side facing outwards so that they don’t show through when it’s displayed on a shelf.
Double-width fabrics are what most people think of when they talk about “bulk” fabric, but in reality all woven fabrics come from a loom double-wide (meaning they have two continuous selvages).
Most double-width fabrics are folded once before they’re rolled onto a bolt, but some are folded multiple times. If a double-width fabric is folded in half, you can still see both selvages after unrolling it. If it is folded more than twice, only one selvage will be visible.
Do I need to always use single width or double width fabrics?
Not necessarily! Both single and double width fabrics have their benefits and drawbacks, but ultimately it’s up to you.
How to get the right fabric?
When you are working on a project that requires you to estimate how much fabric you need, do not panic. There are many factors that play into how much fabric is needed and these factors all vary based on the type of fabric as well as the pattern that you are purchasing. All in all, there are several ways to figure out how much fabric you need for your project!
First things first, know your pattern! Most patterns will come with information on how much yardage is needed to complete the garment. This is usually listed by fabric width but some patterns may also include how much yardage is needed for each size.
If your pattern does not include this information, you can use your measurements as well as the actual garment measurements to estimate how much yardage you will need.
Next, take into account what kind of fabric you are using and what kind of width it comes in. Whether it’s quilting cotton or linen or knits or silk, all fabrics come in different widths depending on their intended use.
Fabrics like jersey knit or stretch lace will be narrower than most other types of fabrics because these fabrics naturally have more “give” which makes them more flexible and easier to work with when crafting garments.
How to Make Sure You Get Enough Fabric?
This might seem like common sense, but if you want enough fabric to complete your project, you need to know how much fabric it requires! Make sure that you have the measurements of what you are working with handy before even considering purchasing anything.
Taking the time to plan out how much fabric you will need for your project is a very important step and can save a lot of frustration, wasted time and money.
There are a few things you can do when buying fabric to make sure you get enough yardage or meters for your project.
Know what the width of fabric is. You may be surprised to know that many fabrics are not actually the width of 44” (110cm). They may be 36”, 40” or even 60” wide. Knowing the width is the first step in getting enough fabric for your project. Once you know this information, there are a few more things to look at to make sure you don’t end up short-changing yourself.
Check if it is one-way design fabric. Some fabrics have one-way designs that run from selvedge (edge) to selvedge (edge). If you are making something like curtains, pillows or tablecloths, this won’t make much difference; however, if you are sewing something like a shirt or dress where the design needs to match up across the garment, then it will matter greatly and you will need to buy twice as much fabric.

A plain kurta, which is generally 2.5 meters long, will take 2.5 meters of fabric.
